Are you a fan of the new Facebook timeline? I think change is hard regardless of what it is. Whether it’s a new boss, new rules, or a new Facebook page – it can take some time to adjust! Well, I have found a reason to love the new look. I’ve figured out how to make my cover photo totally stand out – and it only took me about five minutes! Today I’ll show you, step by step, how to create a Facebook Cover Photo like the one I did above using MiDesign@Michaels Photo Creations.

To get started you will first want to log into your MD@M Photo Creations account. Note: this feature works best for Club Members because with an upgraded account MiDesign@Michaels will email you the high resolution .jpg image of your project. That image is what you will ultimately use to upload as your cover photo.

Next, click Get Started, which will open up the builder so you can start designing.
~Choose “Start Creating” or “Start a New Creation”
~ Choose “Photo Cards”/ “5×7 Flat Card” as your product choice and “Start from a theme”
~Select the “Pool Party” theme by Design Team Member, Amy Teets

The theme will open up, but we will need to make some adjustments in order to size it right for Facebook.

The first thing you’ll want to do with this theme is add a layering paper to define the area you will be designing within.
~1. Select the Layering Paper icon
~2. Drag one of the layering papers to the canvas where you design your page
~3. While the layering paper you dragged and dropped onto the canvas is highlighted (select it with your mouse), click on the “To Back” tool to send the layering paper to the first layer your project
* The ruler ticks on the left will help you place the layering paper in the correct spot. When you hover over the ruler the orange paper should be at 2 5/8.

Now design your cover photo so all of your pictures and elements are ABOVE the orange layering paper. Anything below will not show on Facebook. All I did to mine was
~Delete the “Pool Party” embellishment (you can do that by clicking on the embellishment to highlight it, then clicking the red X in the upper right hand tool bar
~Re-size the photo to end just above the layering paper (click on the photo to highlight it, then drag the corners up and down to resize)
~Resize some of the embellishments to make them smaller and more proportionate to the picture
~Add a picture and some extra embellishments to make it your own!

Once you have your design just right you’re ready to save and upload to Facebook. To do that, you’ll first click “Save” and name your project. Once you’ve saved, choose the DIY Print button (only available if you’re signed in as a Club Member). In just a few minutes your design will arrive in your email inbox! Just save the file as a picture onto your computer, log into Facebook, and choose this new design as your new cover photo! Once you’ve tried this once and get the hang of it, I guarantee you’ll be addicted to updating your photo! Well, at least I am . Let us know what you think!!

Today I am starting a new Friday series called Featured Friday Freebies. There are literally thousands of completely free backgrounds, embellishments, and frames right at your fingertips every day! I want to make sure you know where to find them and how to use them. All you have to do is log into your free MiDesign@Michaels Photo Creations account and search for what you’d like to design with. You may run into some templates, backgrounds, or embellishments that have a “Club” banner on them – you can design with those as well, but won’t be able to share or print your creations until you upgrade your account. If you aren’t interested in upgrading your account, no worries! I’ll show you how to use everything for free..

So, with that in mind, today’s Featured Friday Freebie is a digital kit called “Spanish Baby Girl” by our design team member, Laura Burger. I love this kit because it has everything you’d need to create pages or cards for your sweet baby girl. This kit also features some free Spanish word art! Take a look at the picture to see some of the great background papers and embellishments available.

Did you know that you’re able to keep track of your favorite embellishments and papers in the MiDesign@Michaels builder? I love being able to go back into the builder at anytime and with the click of the button I’m able to pull up all of my favorite finds! This is super simple to do and works for both club and free memberships. Log into the builder and go ahead and open a new project you’re working on or start a new one. On the left hand side select papers or embellishments, which ever you like to start with first. When the dialog box pops up, hover over an embellishment or paper and you will see a red heart underneath. Click on that heart. Now that item will be under the “My Favorites” tab! If you have any questions please put it in the comments box and I’ll answer them as quickly as I can! Also, make sure you check out our coupons, they change weekly!
